Research & Development for the bioconversion of polyethylene in
Silk for sustainable fashion
After three years of research and development in our laboratories we have developed an innovative process of eco-sustainable degradation of plastic by adopting the principles of the circular economy. The process envisaged involves the use of a parasite, known as Galleria mellonella. fed by means of a specially designed feed, added with the material to biodegrade. Sufficiently nourished, the larva reaches the pupal stage, weaving the cocoon around it. The silk obtained from the spinning of the cocoon represents the main product of our process. silk has potentially numerous uses: textile fiber, raw material for the synthesis of a biocompatible plastic film, raw material in the cosmetic field.
